4 x paid summer jobs plus volunteers needed!

This August come and play with us at Porto’s Peculiar Playground, a magical and unique arts & adventure trail created especially for Whitby Park – in the heart of Ellesmere Port.

For the second year running, professional theatre company ATT are bringing Whitby Park to extraordinary life with installations which surprise and delight and for 2021, this will include ‘peculiar goings on’ and ‘curious happenings’.

Combining live performance, art installations and an adventure trail - we aim to capture the hearts and minds of children and grown-ups - ‘playgrounders’, of all ages, from Ellesmere Port and beyond. 

We have 4 roles available for emerging artists or arts/cultural professionals to come and be part of the team for this summer project, plus we are also looking for volunteers!

This will be a great opportunity to learn-through-doing and through shadowing theatre professionals with more experience. 

We are currently recruiting for:

  • 2 x Production Assistants

  • 1 x Assistant Designer

  • 1 x Events Co-ordinator

  • Volunteer Team 


The roles - further information...


Production Assistants

We are seeking 2 x Production Assistants

  • 90 hours work over 6 weeks @ £10 ph (Total fee £900) in July and August (precise hours to be negotiated)  

With responsibility for:

Supporting the Production Manager in the three weeks prior to the trail with sourcing, building and making for the arts trail, supporting the daily set up, pack down and maintenance, supporting the technical requirements of additional events such as the summer school and the visiting artists/performances.

You might be someone who :

Is interested in, or has experience of technical theatre, has existing skills in stage management, prop making or sound installation OR you might have no interest in theatre (yet!) but have transferable skills in carpentry, construction or sound production.

Must be able to:

  • Access Whitby Park in Ellesmere Port independently (contribution to travel expenses could be offered if that is a barrier)
  • Be comfortable working at heights
  • Interact with the general public
  • Work safely and professionally as part of a team

Assistant Designer

We are seeking 1 x Assistant Designer

  • 45 hours work over 3 weeks @ £10 ph (Total fee £450) in July and August (precise hours to be negotiated)  

With responsibility for:

  • supporting the lead designer with bringing designs to life through making, sourcing, painting & installation

You might be someone who:  

  • Is currently studying on, or is a graduate from, a Theatre design course
  • Has some making skills and experience
  • Is interested in costume design as well as set design and installation
  • Would benefit from working under the direction of a lead designer

Must be able to: 

  • Access Whitby Park in Ellesmere Port independently (a contribution to travel expenses could be offered if that is a barrier)
  • Work independently at times, as directed by the lead designer 

Events Co-ordinator

We are seeking 1 x Events Co-ordinator

  • 90 hours work over 6 weeks @£10 ph (Total fee £900) in late July and August (precise hours to be negotiated) 

With responsibility for:

  • Supporting volunteer recruitment process, creation of volunteer rotas, coordination of the volunteer team, stewarding and taking responsibility for ‘visitor experience’, being available to the public to welcome, encourage, evaluate plus other event support

You might be someone who: 

  • Is interested in events planning or stage management, has experience of leading volunteer teams, enjoys meeting new people, wants to play a part in the local community 

You must be able to :    

  • Access Whitby Park in Ellesmere Port independently (contribution to travel expenses could be offered if that is a barrier)
  • Can encourage and support a team of volunteers
  • Have strong admin/organisational skills and an eye for detail
  • Interact with the general public
  • Work safely and professionally as part of a team
  • Provide us with your DBS check details

About Action Transport Theatre

We are a theatre company that work with children and young people as creative collaborators, to make professional and aspirational theatre which we share locally, regionally, nationally and internationally from our home in Ellesmere Port.

For all roles our priority is:

  • To offer emerging artists, designers or technicians a fair ‘foot-in-the-door’ opportunity with us as a company

  • To diversify the range of ‘emerging artists’ we contract/employ

  • To increase opportunities to work with ATT for those who are from under-represented communities within the arts sector (inc. people who are neurodivergant, with a disability, people who are Black, Asian and from other communities who may experience racism

  • To support emerging artists or freelancers who have experienced unemployment due to Covid

  • * By‘ emerging’ artists or cultural professionals – we mean people with some evidence of interest, involvement, experience and skill (perhaps through education or previous employment) but likely to be at an early stage of their careers and in need of further opportunity to grow and develop those skills

  • You must be available for the required number of hours between July 19th to August 31st 2021

Volunteer Team

If you'd be willing to give us some time for free to support this wonderful community project, we're looking for a team of volunteers to act as 'stewards' for the trail throughout August.
